Now difficult to read because a telecoms cabinet has been positioned close against Image, the cast inscription reveals the manufacturer of this stench pole on the corner of Arthur Street as Needham, Stockport, England. John Needham & Sons of Portwood, Stockport were iron founders and manufacturers of grids and manhole covers. They established their foundry in 1834 and it continued in production until 1979. One of the partners, Sir Christopher Thomas Needham, sat as a Liberal MP for Manchester Hulme from 1910 until the Armistice General Election of 1918, when he was unseated by a Unionist.
