Jack Mills was the driver of the mail train that was hi-jacked on 8th August 1963. David Whitby was his fireman. They had boarded the train at Crewe, their home town, for the driver change-over to continue the journey southwards. Both were injured during the robbery and never fully recovered. The plaque was unveiled in December 2014 to mark the courage and bravery of the two Crewe men who had tried to defend their train from the attacking gang. A locomotive was named Driver Jack Mills on the same day.
