Many of the surviving AA village signs are now in museums, although there are a scattering, like this one on the wall of Image, which remain in situ. According to http://www.cvphm.org.uk/AAVillageSigns.html , the unusual nature of this example is increased by the fact that it is headed "THE Automobile Association". Like the gazetteer entries in the AA handbooks, the distance to London is faithfully recorded. In the background is the lane down the valley to Compton. You COULD take that route to London, but it would be quicker to head straight for the main road.
