The council offices were built 1905-07, architect William Longworth, in what Historic England calls an 'eclectic Italianate' style. The southern end of the building comprises the Gaskell Memorial tower, named after the town's once-famous novelist. Listed grade II* (list entry 1388360). Since 2019 the building has been vacant and the town council is currently (2022) consulting on possible future uses.
