Lindow Moss generates subterranean emissions and there are ground level metal vents dotted about the area. I suspect this installation (unmarked) has some role in monitoring or measuring the gasses generated. Parts of the Moss are grassed-over refuse dumps which are even more likely to be sources of methane which, if uncontrolled, could lead to explosions.
