A group in suitable 14th century attire demonstrate the use of pike and halberd to interested onlookers in Boroughbridge on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the battle which took place nearby on 16th March 1322. The battle appears to have been a fairly brief and one sided affair and was between a group of around 1000 men loyal to rebel barons under the leadership of Thomas, Earl of Lancaster [a cousin to the king] and an army of King Edward II which outnumbered the rebels by some four to one. The battle was around a nearby wooden bridge over the Ure and was easily won by the King's army. Lancaster was taken prisoner and later beheaded.
