The Lord Nelson Inn stood at the side of the A370 for well over a century; in the beginning it was a much smaller building close by the site of the present pub. However, trade had become unsustainable and so owners Greene King sold it in 2016 to Tout, who were keen to demolish it and build something new. Locals were horrified and raised many objections, leading to a protracted appeal case. Eventually, the legislators found in Tout's favour and so the large and much-loved pub came crashing down in 2021. Work now carries on to build a larger structure comprising office space, shops and a petrol station.
