Kenley Airfield is used by gliders of the Surrey Hills Gliding Club and by 615 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, which serves the Kent, Surrey, Sussex and London wings of the Air Training Corps and the Combined Cadet Force, giving introductory and more advanced courses to Air Cadets. In the photo are two 17.5m wingspan Viking gliders used by the ATC, with the airfield buildings in the background. The airfield was originally constructed in 1917, and was one of the Battle of Britain airfields in WW2. It closed operationally in 1959 with the station itself finally closing in 1974 leaving only 615 Volunteer Gliding Squadron there to represent the RAF. (615 squadron itself was one of the operational air squadrons based here).
