One of the community hats on the Hats Off To Denton Sculpture Trail in the window of the Funky Chicken Tearoom. In the early 1900s, it was thought that in order to be successful you needed to wear a hat hence the phrase "Get Ahead, Get a Hat". There was a huge trade in hats, with Denton being a global centre, and the largest hat-making town in Great Britain. Get ahead, Get a hat is inspired by this industrious past with support from Denton Local History Society and Denton Hats. The design is by Gordon Banks, who with a background in textiles was keen to learn more about the history of Denton. As a Tameside based freelance artist, he is always excited to work on local projects so was delighted to design and paint this hat.
