This is one of the "Magnificent Seven" London cemeteries (including Highgate and Abney Park) established in the mid-19th Century to solve the crisis in burial spaces. It is in many ways the poor relation of the other six - a result of many factors such as being sited in an area of social deprivation, war time bombing, and the actions of the GLC in 1966/7 who decided to clear the cemetery and turn it into a park. Following local protests and shortage of money the clearance was stopped but not before many buildings and graves had been demolished. This shot in the south east section of the cemetery shows one of the areas cleared of graves. The cemetery is now a designated Local Nature Reserve and Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation.
