Compare this shot with Image which shows the scene at a time of less extreme tides. The towpath - the Thames Path - is completely under water, and a bench is partly submerged. The tide had turned - I believe I'm right in saying - just a few minutes before I took the photo. Fifteen minutes later the outgoing tide was unmistakable..
