This pond is a remnant of a landscape that existed before this area was redeveloped in the latter half of the twentieth century. Formerly an ornamental feature in the grounds of a very large house called The Dales (later the Chancellor's Hall of the University of Birmingham) and shown as a 'fish pond' on the 1887 OS 1/2500 map, the pond is now part of a well-tended privately owned (Calthorpe Estates) open space between Hampshire Drive and other cul-de-sacs.
