Located 100m from the butts, with a series of fox-holes (the stick is poking out of one of them) each of which held an infantryman with a rifle. In my personal experience in the 1970s, each held a schoolboy in the cadet force, armed with a WWI Lee Enfield .303 rifle. Sometimes we'd also fire lying directly on the ground in a prone position. The range is now designated as a Scheduled Monument, as it represents a well-preserved late 19th/early 20th century military firing range https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1445909
