Freemasonry has old roots in the town, dating back to 1781, when The Lodge of True Love & Unity was formed. The meetings were held in a private building which soon became too small. A new venue on Great Gate near the old almshouses was chosen - but both are no longer present. It was decided to build a new hall and so this site became the enduring masonic hall; it was built and opened on 20th January, 1887, at a cost of £250. Thus it stands today.
