The first movement to found a church began in 1823, when a Free Church was built near to the present site. It evolved into the Congregational Church in 1826, but the old building became The Lecture Hall - now demolished. A new church was built in 1869 at a cost of £700, here in High Street. In common with the merger in 1972, it became the United Reformed church.
