I confess I never realised the US Coast Guard served in the European Theatre, but I read that they provided search-and-rescue services at all 5 D-Day beaches, were directly involved in the US assaults on Omaha and Utah beaches, and were also involved in the landings in North Africa and Sicily. The bell by his feet is inscribed "USCG", as a clue to the uninformed.
