Set in the pavement is a utility cover of the former Hull (H) Corporation (C) Water (W) Works (W). Hull Corporation had been responsible for the supply of water to the town per the Charter of 1447. On 1 April 1974 the undertaking was transferred to the Yorkshire Water Authority, one of ten regional authorities created by the Water Act 1973. The authorities were privatised by the Water Act 1989. YWA became Yorkshire Water plc and, in 2008, was taken private under the Kelda Group.
