The pub stands rather separate from the rest of Alfred Street. As the area was developed in the latter part of the nineteenth century, little construction appears to have actually been built here. But by the early twentieth there were many terraced houses (some of which were cleared for the tower blocks), although the pub seems to have been a lot smaller at the time. Over the passing years, it expanded and is first shown as a pub in the early 1900s. In recent times it has suffered a downturn, leading to a closure in 2018. However, it was taken over by new management and is enjoying a revival. Betond is Holroyd House tower.
