From the early 1820s two landowners, Edward Willes and the Earl of Warwick, created a new direct toll-free road between Leamington's growing New Town and Warwick. The stone bridge across the Avon at Portobello was completed in the late 1820s Image The road stimulated residential development in Milverton, west of Leamington.
