Later to become class 71, these electric locomotives were built in 1958 for work mainly in the Kent area. They were used for both passenger and freight work. E5010 (later 71010) was one of those fitted with a pantograph for use in freight yards equipped, for safety reasons, with overhead rather than third rail current supply.
