The pub probably occupies the site of a royal hunting lodge from Plantagenet times, although the building itself, with its classic Surrey tile-hung elevations, dates from the 16th century. It is a Shepherd Neame outlet. The 1881 Census shows the following occupants: George BINGLEY, Head of the household, Married, Age 45, Born Guildford, Surrey, Occupation Licensed Victualler Sarah BINGLEY, Wife, Married, Age 41, Born Haslemere, Surrey James DEAN, Visitor, Widower, Age 30, Born Chesterton, Cambridge, Occupation Commercial Traveller The pub is on the A283 Petworth Road.
