London Road Cemetery was originally laid out in 1846-7 by Joseph Paxton. The original section was north of the railway, with a first extension south of the railway being added in 1886. A further westward extension was added in 1929. This photo shows the Civilian War Grave situated at the head of a garden in the latter extension - a sign at the entrance reads: "London Road Cemetery Civilian War Grave. Resting in these gardens are those who lost their lives during the Air Rain in 1940. May they Forever Rest In Peace." and the central panel of the memorial reads: "This garden is dedicated to the memory of residents of the City of Coventry who lost their lives through enemy action during the World War 1939-45 and whose bodies were interred here." over 800 names are listed on the side panels.
