William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a famous church architect whose work often divided opinions. This is the lychgate of St Saviour's, Coalpit Heath, dated 1845. It has two entrances, one for the departed, and in a robust but simple style. Despite the disapproval of some, Butterfield went on to design dozens of churches from 1845-95.
