The station opened, with two platforms and art-deco buildings, in 1931, to serve the growing camping and holiday camp market in the area (and later military installations during WW2). Since the 1960s it has only had one line. See the Friends group website https://fosgs.weebly.com/history.html for photos of the old station buildings, which were only removed in 1997, leaving the simple unstaffed halt that it is today. The up platform remains intact, with the possibly still mooted of restoring a second track to enable more frequent trains in future.
