Black Ven, between Charmouth and Lyme Regis, is the largest coastal mudslide complex in Europe. Underlying clays prevent adequate drainage and during periods of heavy rain, the overlying rocks become so saturated that they 'slide' down the cliffs on to the beach below. Winter storms regularly remove the 'toe' of the mudslide.
