Using older 1:50000 mapping (as found on my Garmin GPS) it appears that this obvious path is a public bridleway, which is shown passing below the barn and through the next gate to find its way by a sharp right turn by the trees. That field actually has no exit, being surrounded by drystone walls topped by posted pigwire. Needless to say, I was most disgruntled at being unable to continue my walk where I had expected a right of way. Looking at the current online mapping, the bridleway is shown above the wall to the right of the photo, and the newer 1:50000 mapping is also definitely different from the older, so it seems less fair to complain about the path dead-ending. However, given the misleading map (many copies of which must still be in circulation), it would not be unreasonable to expect a bit of waymarking to put walkers and equestrians on the right track - there are those who would cheerfully climb over walls in such circumstances which is really in no-one's best interest.
