This former bridge (marked as 'subway' on some modern maps) used to lead from open fields south of the railway, to the Smithfield cattle market site just to the north. From the 1970s onwards, it was the access for cars to get from Aston Street into the premises of the squash club and swimming pool (site now occupied by flats & houses just west of here) and it's now a pedestrian-only path under the railway between Aston Street and the Silvermere Park housing estate.
