Disused Mine, Park Nook

The disused mine is marked on the 1:25,000 OS sheet, but not on the 1:50,000. The location is on the western outcrop of the Carboniferous Productive Coal Measures, but the mining here was for fireclay. The link to the Colliers Arms Public House in Grid Square Image is therefore uncertain. 'The image displayed is not Park Nook Mine. I worked there for 9 years and my father worked there for 36 years as a shot firer, deputy and later manager before Wilkinson's sold out to Butterley Brick manufacturers. Coal was never mined there, it was a fireclay mine with top and bottom clay which was worked in the 36 yard band. There was fault in the land between Park Nook and Knowles clay mine. They worked in the 48 yard band and did not need timber to support the roof.' - Gary Ellis email to Richard Kay 6 April 2021
