The church stands in Pembroke Road (once known as Gallows Acre Lane) after being founded in 1868. After further additions, the church was badly gutted by an incendiary attack in 1940, with much of the interior lost. Many parishioners and pupils of a school formed a human chain to rescue as much of the furnishings as possible. Having been forced to hold services in the adjoining parish hall (now flats as Garden Court), it took many years for the rebuilding to start. However, the latest architectural impetus brough this striking blend of old and new styles.
