Set into the flagstones is a maker's mark. The company seems to be founded by Richard Tappin Claridge (c1798-1857), wo had a colourful life but is noted as a prominent leader in the emerging asphalt industry. He founded, among others, the Claridge's Patent Asphalte Company in 1838 and the company was based in Stangate, Westminster. The paving here caps the cellars and basements attached to the houses, so the need for a waterproof roof is clear. There are a few examples of this type of paving left in Britain, this being one.
