Seen from Broadwater Road, these are the dilapidated remains of Welwyn's Shredded Wheat Factory. It was built in 1925 to a design by Louis de Soissons and is regarded as a fine example of 20th century industrial architecture. For many years the plant, producing the popular breakfast cereal, was a major employer in the town but closure came in 2008 after which the buildings became derelict. The site was initially acquired by Tesco but their proposal for a mixed use development was denied planning permission in 2012. However, it changed hands in 2017 and the current proposal - the 'Wheat Quarter' - promises 1,220 new homes together with community facilities. Already some of the old buildings have been demolished but those that remain are grade II listed and will be incorpoated into the new development.
