The purpose of the monument is obscure, but it is thought to be the same one marked on an 1851 Board of Health map. It is not mentioned in either of the listings for Bond's Hospital or Bablake School, but the extent of weathering suggests it could be of medieval origin. Behind, on the right the main range of Bond's Hospital http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6980416 . The other building is the former school office building, built in 1898.
