Although there has been a market at Coventry since at least the 12th century, the current indoor market is housed in a building dating from 1957. It was an unusual concept, a circular building with a car park on the roof, and is perhaps best described as being of its time. Designed by Douglas Beaton, Ralph Iredale and Ian Crawford of Coventry City Architect's Department it is now grade II listed and is 'a good example of 1950s Festival of Britain style architecture'. In this view a selection of handmade pork pies is being prominently advertised.
