Prolific garden plant which has spread far and wide, seemingly to every patch of waste ground in the land. It may now rival Rosebay Willowherb as the most prevalent on disused sites. Can be a problem for British Rail as it germinates within decaying brickwork and mortar, undermining the environs of the tracks and railway cuttings. Purple / mauve is the most common colour, and the flowers are well-known to attract many insects, especially butterflies. 2021 must be a good year as it is blooming everywhere at present.
