Or a half-alive tree if you prefer to look at things that way. The picture was taken from towards the top end of Kirkgate, the road heading from the South into the old village of Currie. The suffix 'gate', often found in street names across Britain, has nothing to do with gates as we know them today. The Vikings brought the word across with them a thousand years or so ago - the Norse word 'gata' simply means street or way.
