Entry to the gardens is not free and at this un-manned access point there's a turnstile with an intercom terminal. It appears that anyone wishing to enter there must make contact via the intercom to arrange payment upon which the turnstile would be released remotely to admit them. The road in the foreground gives access to the Durham city Park and Ride facility at Howlands.
