The narrow alleyways that surround the old Corn Exchange were a busy and cramped place for a regular market. Complaints about the obstructions and noise prompted the authorities to rethink the situation. The stalls were relocated to these narrow streets close by but benefitted from a glass canopy to keep them dry. Much of the architecture dates from Georgian times, although the glass canopy was a replacement after the original was lost in the Blitz.
