Probably an original feature, as the building would have been in existence around the period that the local fire insurance companies were in business. Fire Plaques, such as this 'Salop' version, were used as visual evidence from the late 17th century onwards that the building was covered by one of the fire-extinguishing services of the time, there being no national service at that point. The Salop Fire company was presumably based at Image just along the road, as the inscription above one of the doors of that building says 'Salop Fire Office'
