Lock 23 is right by the bridge carrying Thimble Mill Lane over the canal. Restricted space has meant that a recess in the retaining wall has had to be provided for the gate beam to swing. Exactly who 'Joseph Jossy Jo' may be is anybody's guess but canal lovers would be obliged if he would desist from painting his name on the lock gates.
