Looking into the former Dry Dock at Hynish from the dock wall on the northern side (much shorter than the pier on the opposite side of the dock). The dark vertical-oblong portal which can be seen in the dock's western wall (directly below the old signal tower) is the sluice exit through which a million or so gallons of water would be released to wash out the sand and silt from the dry dock when it needed to be used. This water was delivered from a reservoir up the hill via an aqueduct. For a close-up of the portal see Image]
