According to a sign at the entrance: 'The Walled Garden was built around 1850 as a Victorian Kitchen Garden, complete with Peach, Cucumber and Carnation Houses, Vinery, Mushroom Shed and flower borders. Between 1955 and 1989 this garden was used as a plant nursery. Then as the greenhouses were rotting, the garden was reshaped as a restful place in the form of a Celtic cross.'
