Acorn Bank was first owned by the Knights Templar in 1228, and from 1323 by the Knights of the Hospital of St John. After the Dissolution it was acquired by Thomas Dalston. In 1950 It was given to the National Trust, who let it to tenants, the last being the Sue Ryder Foundation. The present house was built in the 16C (the centre and west wing) but was altered and extended in the mid-18C. (Information from the visitors' leaflet and from Pevsner.) The object in the centre of the circular lawn is a sundial (listed, Grade II).
