The Swanley to Sevenoaks Bat & Ball line via Otford was opened on 2nd June 1862 by the London, Chatham & Dover Railway Company (LCDR). The line from Otford to Maidstone East was opened by the LCDR on 1st June 1874, and on 1st July 1884, the line was extended eastwards to Ashford. Electric services between Bickley and Sevenoaks were introduced on 6th January 1935. Trains to and from Maidstone East and Ashford International do not stop between Swanley and Otford. The lines to Sevenoaks and to Maidstone East diverge immediately south of the M26. This view is from a foot crossing just south of the station and looks towards Maidstone East and Sevenoaks.
