In 1982 this was a standard grade non-VAT Youth Hostel (£2.30 per night for those aged 21 and over, sleeping in dormitories) described in the YHA Handbook simply as "Two adjoining terrace houses in typical stone-built Pennine market town, once associated with carpet weaving". YHA Hostellers usually helped out by doing 'chores' in the morning. Unusually, this particular hostel would ask some members to tend to the back garden!
