This is the station that never saw a train. The Dartmouth Station was built by Brunel as part of the railway line from Newton Abbott to Dartmouth. Unfortunately a bridge across the Dart Estuary was required to reach the station, but the Admiralty vetoed this. Brunel had to settle for a station across the water at Kingswear and a ferry to Dartmouth, but the station was still built on Dartmouth Quay. The Great Western Railway owned the line, ferry boat and station, a situation which exists today with the line from Paignton and ferry boat owned and run by the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway.
