The church was designed by C.H. Gabriel in an Early English Gothic style. Land was acquired by subscriptions and donations, and consecrated in 1855. Work began the following year and, using local stone, finished in 1857. The church was still classed as a chapel of ease until around 1865, whereafter it was licensed and became a Parish Church with an incumbent. This permitted weddings to take place. Grade II listed.
