The Clock Tower has stood in the market square since around 1879, opened by the then Earl of Lichfield. Originally it stood over the Market Hall and Urban District Council offices, but the heart of the building was demolished in 1981 when the new Cannock Chase District Council withdrew funding and it fell into disrepair. It stood empty for around five years before demolition and the land stood unused for a further three years when the District Council started to use the land as a car park. At the start of the 1990s a housing company purchased the land and developed it into warden-assisted old people's accommodation. The design of the building was sympathetic to the age of the original building and fits in nicely with the surrounding architecture. The main entrance to the market hall under the clock tower is now a health supplement shop.
