Memorial to George Stevens

This memorial to Jockey, George Stevens, is easy to miss being almost hidden in the hedge. The inscription reads: 'In Memory of George Stevens The rider of winners of five Grand National Steeplechases who, after riding for twenty years with no serious accident was killed by a fall from his hack only three months after riding 'The Colonel' in the Grand National of 1871' In 1863 and 1864 he won the Grand National riding respective horses 'Emblem' and 'Emblematic' both owned by the 9th Earl of Coventry of Croome Court. George's nearby cottage was named 'Emblem Cottage' Image It's curious, the inscription appears to be wrong, his last Grand National winner was in 1870 and more than a year before his accidental death.
