Or, as they are known hereabouts, a pikey block. A simple way to close off entrance to a field. It is deployed using the single hole in the top. A clever device called a Lewisson, a Lewis Pin, or simply a Lewis, is inserted and when lifted grips outwards onto the sides of the hole. These devices were known to the Romans, and perhaps others before them.
