The school provides education for children aged 11-14 who are "excluded, at risk of exclusion, sick or otherwise unable to attend a mainstream or special school". The place name Ellar Carr also occurs near Bingley, and Ellar or Eller is found elsewhere in Yorkshire. It means 'Alder marsh'.
